My Winding Road

NEVADA
I-215
Summerlin
by Wesley Kittel

One of my favorite winding roads is I-215, otherwise known as the Bruce Woodbury Beltway, named after the commissioner who championed its construction.

The Beltway is relatively new and a very nice drive. My favorite stretch is from the Las Vegas Strip to Charleston Boulevard, which takes you to the very posh area of Summerlin. The speed limit is 65 miles per hour, but it’s very easy to take it up to 80.

I-215 is especially nice at night when there is not as much commuter traffic. The Beltway is very well-lit and there are bridges featuring beautiful, desert-themed art. This is a fun drive, and I highly recommend it.

MONTANA
U.S. Route 89
Saint Mary
by Rex Roy

Sure, you can take in the sights of Glacier National Park or enjoy some wine at a bed-and-breakfast in the little town of Saint Mary, but Montana’s U.S. Route 89 is a destination in and of itself. Heading out of the plains from the town of Browning located on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, U.S. 89 winds through Northern Montana. The two-lane boasts countless corners and elevation changes, and what makes it challenging is that few of the corners offer the assurance of Armco. Put a wheel off with any kind of speed, and you’ll find yourself crashing through aspen trees or launching off ledges so high your clothes will be out of style before the car stops tumbling.

U.S. 89 invites speed beyond the varied posted limits. Given Montana’s small population and limited highway patrol, getting a ticket is a minor worry, especially off-season. More legitimate worries include free-range cattle and jumbo-sized wildlife. Be cautious, especially at night.

Do yourself a favor, and plan your trip around mastodon season, when motor homes clog roads in and around the national parks of the West. Head out early in June or make your trip in the fall after the start of the school year.
