Lewis Hamilton Becomes Youngest Ever Formula 1 Champion for McLaren Mercedes
In only his second year as a Formula 1 driver, and at the tender age of 23 years, 10 months, and 26 days, McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has become the youngest World Champion in the history of F1.
Hamilton secured his place in the annals of motorsport in rather spectacular fashion, closing in on the title by a single point after moving into fifth place on the final corner of the last race on the season calendar. Hamilton’s work at the Brazilian GP was just enough to edge the race’s winner, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, with Hamilton totaling 98 points on the season to Massa’s 97. Felipe certainly didn’t go down without a fight however, finishing in first place for his home grand prix in Brazil.
Hamilton called the GP, “the most dramatic race of my whole life.” Going on to say, “We did a fantastic job throughout the whole year and, with all the sacrifices we made, I'm so thrilled to be able to win this for everyone."
Hamilton’s championship points with teammate Heikki Kovalainen’s 53, brought McLaren to a second place finish in the constructor’s championship behind the 172 points earned by the Ferrari team.

I actually had to bail at the last lap of this race and didn't see the finish. When I stopped Vettel had just passed Hamilton. I figured that was it. Boy was I wrong!!!! Now I'll have to go back and see what happened. I can't believe he pulled it out.

Glock appeared to let Hamilton through on the second to last corner, giving him a one-point victory over Massa.

Congrats to Lewis on the championship. This should be his second title but he screwed up in the last few races of last year.

Glock was losing 25 seconds per lap to Lewis for the last 2 laps as the track got wet and Glock was still on dry tires. Glock was trying to do on dry tires in the wet what Carl Edwards did at Texas to conserve fuel and try to get to the finish line before being caught. Lewis and Vettle both caught him in the second to the last corner. He probably slid wide, but it would not make any difference. Had he been able to hold his line, Vettle and Lewis could easily have gone around him to the outside, or simply used the superior traction of the wet tires in those conditions to beat him out of the corner and down the straight. What I found hard to believe is that formula one did not have any contingency plans for interviews of Lewis if he won the championship but finished off the podium. Isn't winning the World Championship a bigger deal than winning a race in Brazil? Last year at Homestead, Biffle won the race, but Jimmy Johnson clinched the title. They had both drivers in victory lane. Biffle was interviewed and congratulated for winning the race, but the real focus was on Jimmy winning the championship. I guess the interview room isn't big enough to fit 4 people? That begs the question, is finishing 3rd at Brazil a bigger deal than winning the championship? I guess it is to Bernie and the powers that be in Formula One!
