Little eBay Find: Autozam AZ-1
Fast and Furious takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to Japanese micro cars. Okay, perhaps this Autozam AZ-1 currently on eBay isn’t fast, and the arrest-me yellow body kit may not strike the masses as furious. This is however a very rare find for U.S. soil, and according to the auction the current owner actually spent some time injecting this Suzuki-built, Mazda-marketed minicar with some pizzazz.
Power comes from a turbocharged three-cylinder mill stuffed in the back, sending 64 horsepower to the rear wheels through a five-speed gearbox. If that sounds like a recipe for Geo Metro-esque performance, you’d be right, but with the AZ-1 you at least get half the seats and cool gull-wing doors. That may or may not be macho enough for Vin Diesel, but don't be surprised if Paul Walker snipes it at the last second.

A few years ago I was first made aware of keicars like the Autozam, Suzuki Cappuccino, and Honda Beat. They seem like awesome little cars with a lot of potential here in the U.S., especially with the revised fleet MPG requirements to come. I think we'll see some major influence here from these tiny cars; once again the Japanese are ahead of the game.

The right hand drive is the main detracting feature of these cars. It's like a right handed golfer using a set of left handed clubs. Often the novelty of these cars wears off after a few months. A left hand drive would no doubt attract a large following.

I've been driving a Geo or 8 years and with a heavy load getting 50-60 MP(Imperial)G adjusted for tire size and gaged by measured miles. It handles well, and for a 1 litre engine is very peppy. I hate having to change to half the mileage but they don't make tires to fit them any more unless you are willing to go to 13 inch rims. Mine has rusted a bit and with that and the tires/wheels issue it must be retired. No wonder GM is in the tank without the vision to continue and improve upon the GEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They let Nader kill the Corvair also which was on the drawing board for some neat improvements and handled well despite the 'problems' he railed at which were going to be resolved. The Corvair at the time was getting 26 miles per gallon (Imperial) when everything else was getting much less.

I always fanced one of these "K" class Japanese cars, as I used to have a number of Honda N600's a few moon's ago.
It's a shame that these never come in to europe in any numbers, other wise I would have had one. As Japan and the UK drive on the same side of the road, unlike the states.

This is what I really need and want. I miss my Fiat 850 coupe (they've all rusted away by now). It had a 903cc engine that would rev to 8 grand generating 40 HP. Even with only that it would see 90 MPH (speedo accuracy not confirmed).
It's a shame that most drivers want to isolate themselves from the driving experience. These cars are a total Blast.

I own one of these and I have never had so much fun in a car in my life! The engine is easily tuned to 100bhp and, given the AZ-1's weight (720kg), it will seriously embaress a lot of much bigger cars. Add to that cornering like a go-kart and....
