Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Speedster Spied!

Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are teaming up for one more go in the world of supercars, this time with a special lightweight version the monstrous SLR. The very limited edition speedster (we’re told to expect 75 examples) seems to offer extreme performance in trade for an extreme lack of practicality, a compromise that we don’t envision being a tough sell for M-B.

The stripped SLR will make its way through the world a set of rather huge roll hoops and an F1-sized wind deflector in place of the more pedestrian roof. The speedster seems to be low enough that one could just step in or out over the side, but Mercedes has nevertheless chosen to retain a set of gull-wing butterfly doors. The resultant car looks to have a weight savings of around 200 kilograms, will be able to reach 186 mph from 0 in 26 seconds, and should have a top speed of 217.5 mph.

Expect a formal unveiling of the car by Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton near the end of the month.

I feel like I was thrown backwards out of the German time traveller machine without my future pants to save me.

It's going to be an absolutely magnificent car... Move over Bugatti!

Race car driver in waiting!!

I doubt it. The Veyron Rules!!

Mena

Does it still have an automaitc transmission?

chartguy

I believe those are called "scissors" doors, not gull wings. It's pretty hard to have a gull wing door without a roof.

lol... nice catch chartguy... it lends cause to question if writers are paying attention to what they're writing about, or if they are showing their lack of true experience for what they are writing about. certainly not gull winged because of the door hinge placement and dynamic motion of the door's opening and closing...

technically those are gullwing doors... notice how the door has corkscrewed about 45 degrees. if it was a scissor door it would have remained roughly parallel to the side of the car.

200 kg equals 440 lbs.  I don't know about the roadster, but the SLR coupe had a curb weight in the neighborhood of 3,900 lbs.  The convertible would, logically, weigh more.  Even if Mercedes/McLaren got the weight down to 3,500, that's still not light.  I wouldn't be so hostile to the Speedster if not for the fact that Mercedes is probably going to jack up the price by 30% for an already expensive machine.

It looks really wide to my eyes. As in REALLY WIDE. I find myself wondering why?

Meant to say Nice Viper. I wondered where it went.

Thanks for clearing that up, I wondered what you meant. (good observation re: viper-like)

They took silly, and made it sillier.

A 3,800 lb speedster with an automatic transmission for only $400K U.S.

Brilliant!

AW

This seems incorrect: The car looks like one JUST for show. A "Vision SLR" or something like that.
This is in my eyes just a styling demonstration.
Not a production car to come.

oliver_sudden

Yet another pointless exercise.

mitchel gray

how much?

If Mercedes were testing their new sports car, painted or taped; to hide that fact that it is their new car would they display the Mercedes star in the grill?
