Gravity and Glory: San Francisco’s Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race

2008-byobw-race-hl.jpg

One of many wacky racing events performed in the hilly domain of San Francisco, the city’s Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race is everything we love about motorsports, just without the motors.

This year marked the fourth annual running of the event, in which San Fran natives don silly costumes and race a variety of tiny bikes (and trash bins?) down the winding Vermont Street in Potrero Hill. Check out our gallery below for images of the race that are equal parts strange, terrifying, and hilarious.

Thanks to WINDING ROAD reader Shane Mahoney for the tip (photo credit Edward Aten) .

I think I know a guy who did this a few years ago...it's sheer, unappreciated mayhem. I want to take my kid's Radio Flyer down that hill.

kinda cool that toyota did a commercial inspired by this (sequoia, maybe?), although i could do without their sexy sienna spot, lol.

I live on Potrero Hill and missed this? Damn! Maybe next year.

Factoid: This section of Vermont Street is more "crooked" than the one most tourists know, Lombard Street. Vermont Street is technically SF's "Crookedest Street," not Lombard.
