Racing Community Reaching Out to Help John Fitch

Friends of 90-year-old motoring legend John Fitch are reaching out to automotive world at large in an attempt to keep the former racer and safety innovator from losing his home.

Fitch has been recently embroiled in a losing battle with the State of Connecticut’s Department of Environmental Protection over a matter of two old and potentially leaky oil tanks on his property. After reporting the tanks of his own accord, Fitch was told by the DEP that he would need to remove them and test every well within 500 feet at his own expense. Fitch complied with the request and none of the wells were found to have been contaminated. Despite the clean bill of health for the wells, Fitch was further ordered to remove some 3000 tons of allegedly contaminated soil, racking up a personal bill of $350,000 in the process. That massive tab has Fitch worried that he may lose his home in the twilight of his years, simply for doing the right thing.

As a way doing right by their friend, Dan Gurney, Sterling Moss, and the SCCA corner workers have set up The Friends of Fitch Homestead Fund to help John keep his house. Racing fans interested in donating can help out by sending a check to the address listed below.
