Spied! First-Ever Look At Toyota-Subaru RWD Coupe

Earlier today we took a look at a rather shot-in-the-dark rendering of the upcoming rear-wheel-drive coupe from Toyota and Subaru. Our friendly neighborhood spy photographers at CarPix must have been tuned in, as they've come back this evening with the first-ever real images of the car--at least in prototype form.

The vehicle captured in these photographs is clearly using a Subaru’s Legacy as its base but it looks as if the front and rear clips, wheelbase, and interior have all been modified from stock. There are a pair of Recaro bucket seats that hint at a strongly sporting nature, as well as a strangely visible Toyota emblem in the rear seat area. The heavy white camouflage covering most of the car’s body may obscure much of the coachwork, but it does indicate that there is something worth hiding (re: not just more Legacy) underneath.

We’re told that news of the coupe’s powerplant has also leaked out, with a 2.0-liter boxer four making about 220 horsepower specified. A six-speed gearbox is also said to be part of the package. Perhaps the most exciting part of the new ToyBaru however is in its alleged price, which is said to start just south of $20,000. Consider our interest piqued.

This car has been rumored for along time, and finally we can show you some great photos of it, the Toyota-Subaru RWD Coupe. These photos shot outside a test centre in the UK reveal a lot even if it’s just a mule with a lot of Subaru Legacy parts.

This car that is built together by Toyota and (Toyota-owned) Subaru will probably be called Toyota in Japan, and Subaru in the rest of the world. Model names are still unknown, but it has leaked out that the engine will be a 2.0 litre boxer engine with about 220 horsepower. SVX revisited?

Now that Subaru has proper performance credentials thanks to the WRX franchise, the time seems ripe for a Scooby-badged coupe. As much as I love rear-drive, however, I'm not sure it fits their brand message. Let's hope they offer an AWD version.

This looks either too tall or too short. Look how much headroom there is. I guess I wanted to see dimensions less like the Altezza, even though I do like the IS200. I guess the final curves and bends will decide whether or not I like it.

Paul - that's exactly what I thought when I saw the pics.
Is subaru turning the legacy into the new flagship car? There are even rumors there is going to be a ~400+ hp legacy. Seems like an odd thing to do when the impreza has ~300 hp.

Front engine/rear wheel drive. 2-door. 20k and 200 hp. Could this actually be the REAL spiritual successor to the BMW 2002 and Datsun 510? All that and 21st Century Subaru & Toyota quality?

Lets hope this mule doesn't indicate styling, but other than that, I might even be a buyer.

This is obviously a development mule clothed in a shortened Legacy body. It doesn't indicate anything regarding shape, styling, or brand. It does show relative wheelbase, width,and seat height, however.

Overall shape is pretty similar to the earlier rendering, which I SO hope is accurate. That would be a pretty car. The driver's sitting pretty low in the photo - makes me think the final shape may chop that roof line down a bit.

RWD with 220 HP is pretty good for that size of car. The previous generation WRX's had in that neighborhood (227 - 230 HP) and they were raved about until the STi was introduced and upped the ante. If it's smaller and lighter than the old WRX (which it's bound to be with 2 less doors and no heavy AWD to worry about) that should make it a great driver's car, especially considering it would be the base model.

And a 300 HP AWD model would get me running straight to the dealership - as long as it can stay significantly less expensive than the STi. I'm hoping for $25-$28K range, considering the base model will be below $20K. PLEASE Subie make it happen!

I doubt Subie would be willing to cannibalize sales of the STi, so likely no chance of AWD. As it is, I agree with Hoof - this looks purely like an engineering mule (LOVE the fit and finish on that door!), likely compiling engine data (hence the leak about engine specs) and little else. If they keep the focus on light weight and the final car looks like that gorgeous rendering (crossing fingers it too was leaked by a happy dev), Subie/Toyota will have a serious winner in the hot-hatch category and Honda/VW are gonna have to go back to the drawing boards.

This seems like a spiritual successor to the Silvia/240SX, which Nissan has apparently forgotten all about. High HP/low weight/RWD/inexpensive = good times for all.

People are comparing this to the WRX and whatnot but the main intention of the car was to rekindle the AE86. I hope this car NEVER comes out AWD. I also hope they reduce the roof height just a tad make it look sleeker. Other then that it looks like a cool car. I would still prefer a Toyota engine in it 2ZZGE, 3SGE, New 4AGE or something similar.

Leave the rear wheel drive to Toyota !!!!! Subaru has been about AWD Performance since the first WRX, and should remain that way. AWD is the only way to go, why do you think the new Nissan GT-R is out performing cars like the Corvette ZO-6, because of AWD. I will take an AWD performance car with the same equipment and drivers of same skill any day. The AWD car will have little or no loss of traction, while the rear or front wheel drive will be left spinning their tires. I've seen it happen to many times !!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I like RWD, I grew up with it in the 60's. But my first choice would be AWD, and then RWD. RWD is great for drifting, but in everyday driving and racing in most circumstances, AWD would have the edge.

At this early stage I'd be more interested in specification rather than pictures of test mules. If it gets closer to the cars launch date and pictures like this are still emerging, THEN I'll get more concerned about the styling!

Subaru/Toyota already have the perfect base for this car though; does no one remember the Prodrive P2 from a few years ago? The stling, the performance... that concept had it ALL.

I'd love to see Subaru move towards the Audi A3 or Infiniti EX. The STI's performance is interesting, but the "Mattel Hot Wheels" styling is a huge turn off.

I could see the car with either 220 or 300 hp, as long as the pricing was appropriate. However, it would have to be AWD to be a "real" Subaru.

I don't know. Even if its just a test mule, how could you fit anything on that wheelbase that weighed less than 2900 pounds. You might as well buy a Mazda3 and wait for Toyota to realize that weight, not power is the answer.

This is not the combined effort of Toyota/Subaru. There is a new Legacy in the works and it is due out next year. This is probably the 2010 Legacy. The front end is definitely Legacy. However this is only a two door. Up until now, all legacy's were 4 doors.
