How do you decide when to "let go" of a car that you love?
Recently, my beloved, aging Bronco failed to pass an emissions test. I took it to the mechanic, who fixed it for about $700 (new catalyst). I asked him to look at the speedo, which had developed a stutter on the trip to the emissions test. The stutter turned out to be a broken tooth on the rear sensor ring, caused by a much larger broken tooth on the rear pinion that was floating around the rear diff. Amazingly, there was enough of the tooth remaining that the rear diff made no noise or showed any other symptoms. That was a much larger repair bill, one that made me question whether I might be better off looking for something a bit newer and perhaps less prone to repair bills. The old girl is only a '94, with just 100K miles on her, but there've been a lot of rough dirt roads along the way.
A friend has a diesel Suburban, and he goes through a similar discussion with his wife, every time something else breaks. They don't make those anymore, either, and he does not want to give it up, either. We're both choosing to fix older vehicles that are becoming a bit less reliable, rather than trade or buy something a bit newer.
How do you make decisions like this? Clearly, emotion plays a huge part. My mother likes to say that taking a test drive is as bad as looking at a litter of puppies. In both cases, if you allow yourself to go that far, your emotions will likely allow no turning back.

No new cars I test drove compared to my old one. New cars are boring, isolated, and overweight, even most "sports" cars. It's good everything's so powerful now so they can fool people into believing they're exciting. The only reason I bought a new car in the end was that I felt the 260k mile Subaru was bound to break down at some point, likely in the near future, and breakdowns cost me too much in lost work. On the contrary, driving a new car may make you appreciate the old one even more.
