A Private Racing Community of the Future.

 Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive your race vehicle, exotic vehicle, or any fast vehicle anytime you wanted on your own racetrack in a private residential community? It seems this new racing/testing idea to own a 5 acre lot and live where you race is here now. The next generation of race facility is being built in Arizona. Even though the concept was formulated 12 years ago by Owner, Designer, and Builder Randy Lyles. After a 10-year process, the idea to own and live where you race (or test) is finally becoming a reality.
 The idea was first conceived because there are 2 rules in competitive racing. First you must test your vehicle until you are satisfied with the results. Second, you must test again. Having spent a formidable time of testing as a amateur sports car driver/professional engine builder, Randy Lyles pondered, “the time and money to test is considerable…equal to a Mortgage payment. Why not live where you test? In other words, why not have a Home with a very long driveway?” Deciding to pursue this dream, the process of research to ascertain the interest, the cost to build the facility, and find a remote affordable piece of land began.  However, as the process unfolded the old saying “If I knew then what I know now” was beginning to make sense. The first obstacle that became evident was that if you are building a race facility where you would like to live and build a Home, you must engineer a Residential Subdivision (every County is different but generally speaking), you must go through 3 levels of approval with that County, go through a minimum of 2 approvals from Agencies with that State, and create every kind of document related to or not to that subdivision. This is in contrast of the Commercial process, which are at least 70%, less effort in terms of paperwork. So, as it has been said, “every Man’s Dream is nothing more than a collection of nightmares”, the process to build a residential racing community officially started in the year 1999. Of course hindsight is 20-20 but to make a long story short, after 5 years of documents, uncertainties of Engineers/Contractors, difficult financing, and the changing of County regulations…the continuance of the original plan became obsolete. So, knowing that there is a fine line between determination and stupidity (and having been on both sides of that line), determination set in and a new plan was formulated. So, again, to make a long story short, new plan, new documents, and the decision to do the construction personally took shape. With that, “Competition Ridge” a private racing community was more viable than ever and now, to date, the County documents are completed through all levels, State documents are all finished, and preliminary construction of the subdivision which includes the creation of nineteen 5 acre Lots, roads, signs, and drainage culverts has been on going since January of this year. With only drainage culverts yet to complete, the building of the first Home/Shop began in September of 2009 and will be finished by the end of October 2009. The next step scheduled for this year is the paving of the 1.7-mile road-racing course. Once the road course paving is finished, the necessary paperwork and paving of the drag strip and oval will be concluded early next year. It is also worth mentioning that both the road course and oval have been designed with road and oval tracks incorporated into their layout so there will never be a shortage of track time to race or test a different array of vehicles by the Homeowners at anytime. Also, to compliment the private racing community we have started the construction of a commercial track 20 miles from “Competition Ridge” for the private owners use as well! So with that, the one Man’s collection of nightmares will soon be complete and the private racing community of “Competition Ridge” can “Dream at Speed” under the Arizona Blue Skies!
