Question of the Day: New Mustang, Yea or Nay?

While it’s impossible to make a fair judgment about the car without having had any time behind the wheel, what say you about the 2010 Ford Mustang from a purely aesthetic point of view? Are you in favor of, or opposed to the Mustang redesign after your first look? Give us your vote, in comments.

Nay.

Nay. Due to the lack of independent rear suspension.

I don't like Fords, so I wouldn't buy one regardless of it's styling. For those who like the retro 2/3 size 1969 look of the current Mustang, they didn't do anything to hurt its styling. The wrap around tail light treatment looks goofy to me, but probably is not objectionable. The biggest concern that I would have looking at it is the size of the rear quarter windows. If the driver is an experienced truck driver used to having to rely on mirrors make safe lane changes, it is ok, but it looks like it will have a huge blind spot off the rear fenders on each side of the car for those who are not used to checking mirrors before changing lanes. The other thing I don't like is the lack of independent rear suspension. The number of previous Mustang Cobras that have had their irs criticized or changed back to a live axle has suggested to me that either the people who buy Fords don't know what the benefits of irs are, or that Ford just doesn't know how to design a decent irs. I ffound it especially interesting that a friend that races a Camaro in the CMC Challenge series reported that most of the Mustangs that he races against don't have the Ford irs, but rather copy the trailing arm, solid axle design of the third & fourth generation Camaro & Firebird.

I loved the concept for the 2005, but hated the production version.  Three major complaints:

The front end was far less aggressive, they raised the roofline, that ugly tri-oval window.

The new version fixes one of those problems.  The ragtop fixes the other two.

I agree, the GT concept was stunning (despite the red interior), and could have been offered as a separate version for exclusivity (Cobra?).

I like the evolution of the design in that it recalls late-60's/early-70's 'stangs, but I absolutely hate the taillight treatment. What were they thinking?!? Doesn't recall anything in any past or present Ford lineup, let alone the Mustang itself. The RWRW is fine, but the shape is atrocious and almost nullifies the overall-pleasing (to me) design of the car.

To note, my girlfriend is a Mustang fanatic, and when I showed her images of the new car, she couldn't have been more intersted. She's still holding out for a '67 GT500, of course...

I think we need a third option: Yeah, Nay, and Meh.

Considering the online hype surrounding this launch, I'm not really all that excited about the final product.

I think the front end is ok, but I like the 2005 design better. The rear is way to round, and gives it a less aggressive look. I think were going to see the new Camaro and Challenger leading in sales in the future, especially if the mustang stays with the 5.4 v8(?), the Camaro has the 6.2 with over 400 hp.

meh

Agree!

I like what Ford did with the Mustang far better than what Nissan did with the 370Z. I was never a fan of the 2005-2008 Mustang appearance or driving experience. Ford did a nice job addressing one of one of my complaints.

Pedro

Another vote for meh. I was hoping for some cues in the 2003 concept car to finally make it into production.

But it's not a nay. Let's put it this way: I don't see it as Ford's savior. Just not that exciting, especially in the face of the Challenger and Camaro as renewed competition. We'll have to wait and see what Shel can do with it I suppose.

Tim

Yay, I do like the redesign. It isn't perfect and it's not lost the live axle, but it is a pony car, it is good looking, it is fast enough, and just wait till Saleen and co get their hands on this thing (that power dome should be useful).

Buck tooth Billy Bob

Nay! Looks just like the 2008, boring.....

bigmikeo

Mustang owners will love it, others will hate it. I think the 2003 show car should have come in as a Merc Cougar. Interior is still garbage, hard to believe they could make it look MORE like a dodge dash.....bleh. I'm 6'3" and had to really reach for the seat belt in an 06 I drove. The the front end felt like it was worn out, it chattered over bumps.

Challenger is a nice thought but it's based on the Charger, which is based on the 300, which is based on an old Mercedes, I believe was an E-class?

Camaro? I've never cared for them much, I liked the 70 RS/SS with the split bumper but others didn't hit me right. I love Big Red from Silver State Classic fame but it's a race car.

Aesthetically, I like it.

Gay. No independent rear suspension. If GM can do a double wishbone front AND rear suspension (with Bilsteins) for under $30k, Ford can at LEAST do a strut type in the back. I mean, it's only 2008 and they're STILL doing beam axles. What's next? Rear drums too? I do like the front end more than the present one.

IntoxicatedPuma

well they did say on autoblog that the new V6 will now come with rear sway bars. I just about fell out of my chair laughing at that. The V6 is from the 70's too, I was really expecting that they'd replace it with the 3.5L with this refreshing.

Mena

I'm sure the slight weight advantage of the 3.5L V6 and the hp bump would've embarrassed the V8 model. Since I'm not a buyer, Ford probably doesn't care what I think since their Mustang customers could give a rats ass.

Panhard Rods FTW!

The mustang Yea. But the Fusion? Nay. I know you didn't ask about that, but I thought I'd put in my two cents.

I don't know - I don't tend to like the exterior as well as my 99 Mustang, or the 2000's - I like the conical look of the dashboard - but I hate dark colors in a dash - want some light color offerings also - with some contrast. I would definitely like to see better gas mileage in the 6 - my 99 seems to have plenty of power - but I would expect in 11 years to have significantly better gas mileage. Also, I would hope the trunk is much improved - the "bar" above the pass-thru in the rear prevents so many items from being loaded - and why is it necessary? I would also like to see a way for taller people to get into the car easier -

I would not be in any rush to trade in my 99 - at about 105,000 miles still a great car. I do definitely want traction control in my next stang though -

Diskinetic

It's hard to truly assess this car, because I keep falling asleep looking at it. But, at least now I know what color to suggest for Pepto-Bismol if they change flavors.

Charles

I like the new Mustang! Just wish they had done more with the syling, especially the C shape on the sides at the doors which looks okay on 1965,1966 models but a more 1969- 1970 look would be better and rear spoiler needs to be more like the old one as well! But at least they did not ruin it!

The interior is a great improvement! Just hope to do a Boss package or Mach 1 and no more Bullitts!

SoCal

meh...looks good from the outside just wish the inside matched..even the base Camaro has more power...sticking with the General fo sho...

An increase of HP of that measure... will not be able to keep pace with the Camaro V6. Bang for the buck, this vehicle will be a loser.

Mark in Maine

I like it a bit better than the current one, but I'm in agreement with everyone here about the next gen. car's lack of any sort of independent rear suspension - guess that will be up to the tuners and the aftermarket . . .

Anonymous

This isn't the next-gen, just a slight improvement. A facelift.

andrew

HELLS YEAH! they finally fixed the rear tail lights and made the rear windows smaller... 10x better

cjevans_48

i like it because the front end is more agressive looking that last years model.

snakekiller

people peole stop conplaning about not having irs the car looks great and will handle great like the billit also the car is more aerodinamic and less weight than camaro or challenger if you need more power you can get a paxton super charger in the dealer that will bring the engines hp about 400hp there also an ecoboost 3.5tt v6 engine for the mustang in the near future about 340hp also the mustang has so many mods for cheap than any other american car i will like to see what saleen shelby steeda griggs roushe does with the car o an also the reason people dint like the cobras irs was because they drag race and irs arn good for drag racing the brake under the stress of hard launches almost all the people buy the mustang for one thing and that thing is drag racing theres no turns corners in street racing only light to light one more thing the shelby gt500 alrady destroy the challenger srt8 the srt8 only won on 3 things stoping power and better intirior also on weight they r fat pigs

chas
