Question of the Day: What Do You Think of Trikes?

Unidentified custom trike

From the Can-Am Spyder to the Piaggio MP3, it seems like there has been a pronounced uptick in trike development and interest over the last year or so. The question is… do you care? Are these new three-wheelers interesting to you, and would you ever consider buying one... or would you really rather just have a motorcycle?

The last time I rode one, another kid threw a water balloon at me and got my trike all wet. I was so made I went inside the house, put on my Batman costume and came back outside. I wanted to beat his butt.

The question is… do you care?

Nope.

I want to see production reverse trikes that I can sit in not riding astride. I still think that VW should make GX3. That would be really cool.

I still don't understand trikes. You get few of the benefits of a motorcycle with all the disadvantages. Want wind in your face but too old to ride a motorcycle? Get a convertible like every other retired geezer out there!

Make mine an Aptera. Second choice, a VentureOne.

Trikes are not for me, but are great for handicaped people who still want to have the open air feel of a motorcycle, or older people who cant do the 2 wheel thing anymore.

I am loving the looks of them, and am looking forward to test driving one. In fact I'm making plans to buy a Can-Am Spyder. Handicapped? Old? How about Corvette performance for 16,000. Wind in my face, na. Open to the road. No confines. Howabout my wife mounted behind me with her legs around me. The Spyder can be outfitted with aftermarket touring options. It will get more looks than anything anywhere near it in price. We need more options in the motoring world. Let's see some more.

I'd like to see a full comparison road test between similarly outfitted 2 & 3 wheelers. They are intriguing.

Do they handle better, are they safer, do they take less skill to drive, how do riders survive in crashes, etc?

Why not get an open wheel car with side by side seats - so you can look into the face of your companion?

James A. Prestwick

If trikes were a good idea, we'd all be driving Morgans.

Barry Walstead

Ah, as you so wisely hark back to the Morgan three wheeler you must know why it was so superior to similar priced cars of the day?

Could it be the vastly decreased mass, and almost unchanged handling characteristics?

I love reverse trikes, and for the ultimate expression simply look at the peugeot 20cup, amazing concept. Not to mention the VW concept.

Currently I ride a Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail Classic and I'm 58 years old. Yes I'm very interested in Trikes, especially the ones with two wheels up front that tilt when cornering. This type of motorcycle will allow me to take the curves just as fast when I'm 78 years old as I do now on two wheels.

I am a 65 year old Vietnam Vet who rode motorcycles for years before my injury. Twenty-eight years ago I said someday I will ride again. Last July I bought a 1997 Harley Trike. Been riding since I got it. Winter's here, can't wait for Spring. Remember me when you start criticizing trikes. You haven't even tried to ride. Push a mile in my wheelchair and you might think differently.
