Question of the Day: Who or What Got You Interested in Cars?
Though we may all come from diverse backgrounds, different socioeconomic strata, and far-flung places on the planet, most of us reading NextAutos and Winding Road share at least one thing—a love of cars. Which person, or what car propelled you into a love for the automobile? Give us a little back story, and of course a picture if you can find one, in comments.

Not exactly sure. I collected matchbox cars as a kid, and loved to put together models of muscle cars and engines.  I lived in South Dakota, therefore started "lap-driving" when I was about 6-7 years old and loved every bit of cars ever since. Got my license 2 days after turning 14 and bought my first car with my own money the very same week. Driving, detailing, and modifying cars is my essense of life.Â

My dad has always been a car person, well, one type of car person - Mustang. Â I've always known about cars and was slightly interested, but Gran Turismo really expanded my interest in automobiles. Â It's the sole reason I use my PS2 (Logitech force-feedback steering wheel and pedals). Â I really got into cars and the auto industry when I bought my first MINI in 2005. Â Now I'm actually interested in doing maintenance myself. Â

To tell you the truth, it was David E. Davis' video, "Come along for the ride" for Winding Road magazine.

An excerpt from my blog:
"....I don't know when I said to myself, 'I love cars and everything about them.' It happened to me about two years ago. When I saw the famous "Come along for the ride" video by David E. Davis Jr. of Winding Road digital magazine. I came along for the ride and never looked back since. I started reading the Winding Road RSS feed and reading the digital magazine. Then I found out about Auto Blog and the rest is history...I guess I never really cared about cars until I saw David E. Davis' video, "Come along for the ride" and it really changed my life. I also read his book, "Thus Spake David E." and I loved it. I then had it signed by him and then I gave it to my mechanic as a gift..."
So, that's my story and I really owe it you guys.
Thanks,
Wes

My Dad. He's got hundreds of stories about That Damn Alfa, the Other Damn Alfa, and the Last Damn Alfa I'll Ever Buy. Oh, and then there's the One He Bought Last Summer.Â
I guess some of that rubbed off on me, cuz I love to hate Italian cars, too.

Interesting question, I was 11 when I got gran turismo on PS1. all of my friends back then hated it, but for some reason I liked it big time. From the game, I learned a huge chunk of info about cars and motoring (seriously, this is not a joke). Afterwards, I got my first driving license. I was 17 when I got my first car ('96 Impala SS that was sold in '98 out of GM dealer in Dubai). It was a second hand but fresh like new. The car was beautiful, no question. I can easily say it was the top performing american sedan back then. I loved the car, and I would buy another if I found one in a good shape.

Three things stick out:
1.) Riding in my dad's '63 Triumph Spitfire with the top down, age 4 or 5
2.) Carving canyons at 85 mph in a family friend's '67 Maserati Mistral, age 5 or 6
3.) Coming in second in a swim race to claim a die-cast 1:18 '69 Mustang Boss 302, age 6 or 7
ps. I now own the very same Maserati Mistral and a '76 Triumph Spitfire; will continue seeking the Coral Boss 302

When I was younger (much younger) my dad used to buy me Matchbox cars. I think I had about a 100 of them.
We also had a 1977 Ford Granada 3.0 (the one with the Essex V6) and I can distinctly remember how I used to fall into the back seat when my dad put his foot down.
In South Africa in the early 80's those v6 Fords (Capri, Cortina & Granada) were some of the quickest sedans on the road. Of course there were the V8 Perana Fords but they were out of reach for most people. I can also remember the big tin-top battles (Ford vs Bmw vs Alfa) at our local racetrack (Killarney, near Cape Town). The soundtracks were awesome.
I still buy Hot wheels (whatever happened to Matchbox?) for my son. He's only 2 years old but he already knows all the makes of cars on the road.

My father who was a big Nascar fan in the 50 & 60"s, he carried me to the 1963 Southern 500 at Darlington, I can still remember 'Fireball Roberts' winning the race in a Holman Mooody Lavender 1963 Ford Galaxie, the race was run believe it or not without a single caution flag!
From then on I was a 'Car Guy"! It was a great car decade in the 1960s from Muscle Cars to Funny Cars on the dragstrip! All the exciting models from the big three, the introduction of the Mustang, GTO,Road Runner! No look alike cars with Corporate Grilles, new body styles every two years! What was there not to like?
