Report: Audi Pulls The Plug On The R8 V-12 TDI
We've had news left and right of mildly interesting cars being killed off due to the financial state of the global automotive marketplace. But now here's one that hurts -- reports are now showing that Audi will be canning its plans to bring forth a production version of the R8 V-12 TDI, or TDI Le Mans.
Originally unveiled at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, the R8 V-12 TDI Concept featured a 5.5-liter turbo-diesel V-12 -- a complete monster, what with its 500 horsepower and 740 pound-feet of torque output numbers. But as you can imagine, it's not cheap to engineer or produce something to this caliber, and Audi thinks that its money is better spent on more sensible projects.
No official word has been given from Audi on this matter, but we're crossing our fingers in hopes that this V-12 oil-burner isn't headed for an early grave.

I've been saving every spare penny so i can own the R8TDI once/if it came to US shores. The proposed $300,000 was not even a concern. But w/ this grim new, i can now start looking for an investment house. I'd rather have the R8TDI !!!
I wish Porsche Holdings (or whatever the financial groups name is) would kick Audi's butt into submission and make them go forth in a car segment/market that has no competition and a select number of guaranteed buyers.

The real estate market is nowhere near a bottom. You'll know it's a bottom when rents are enough to cover a mortgage payment, and maintenance. That's down at least 50% from here.

In europe, (I live in Portugal and it sells here) there is an Audi Q7 with a V12 TDI, 6 liter, 500 BHP.
So I believe this decision has nothing to do with development of the engine. Although Q7 and R8 are two VERY different cars, I believe the engine wouldn't be much different.
Ah, and it costs 193.000 EUR all taxes included, just 80.000 more than the 4.2 FSI. Considering teh R8 4.2 FSI costs about 154.000, the expected price of a R8 V12 TDI would be about 234.000. Expensive, but not astronomical.
Am I right?

i'm a diesel fan & it's a pitty that this monster sportscar is going to ditched. they can @ least use the same engine found in the VW Touareg R50 (5.0L V10TDi) / AUDI Q7 (6.0L V12TDI)
