Report: Cadillac XLR Being Killed Off This Spring

Cadillac XLR-V

According to a report from the Bowling Green Daily News, General Motors is said to be stopping production on the Cadillac XLR, the luxury marque's Corvette-derived hardtop roadster. The XLR is currently manufactured at GM's Bowling Green assembly plant, which is essentially a small-staffed operation dedicated to XLR and Corvette.

This doesn't come as much of a surprise, since the Cadillac XLR never really took the ranks of a "luxury Corvette," what with its Northstar V-8 under the hood and relatively sedate driving dynamics; and a price point near $100,000 didn't really help, either.

Around forty workers at the Bowling Green plant are expected to be laid off in lieu of the XLR's death with the remaining workforce being dedicated solely to Corvette production. There's no official word from GM on this news yet, but we wouldn't expect to see the XLR making it through one more model year.

The XLR was the most distinct example of the Cadillac Art & Design theme. Its angular form captured the essence of the Evoq concept. The XLR was a well-received car prior to the C6's debut and Cadillac did update the XLR somewhat to keep it more entertaining. The XLR-V has a supercharged 4.4 L V-8 that pushed out a nice 440+ hp.

I do agree: the price is what killed it. GM also let the XLR drop off the radar. More could have been put in to push it up against Mercedes's SL-class. People should give the car more credit: it was a more respectable effort than the Allante or the Lexus SC430. The 2009 base model (with a 320 hp 4.6 L and a 6 spd. A/T) starts at $86,000. If I had the money, I might entertain the idea of buying one.

Used low mileage cars (13-15k or so) can be had around the low to mid $40's. I've seen some 30-40k cars in the high $20k's.

According to XLR Net, total XLR production (V included) from 2004-08 was 15,700 units. That's less than one year of Corvette production...less than half.

When Cadillac was a luxury car player, the XLR might have made sense. When G.M. started "badge engineering" with no clue to what set the Cadillac apart from the Chevy, they surrendered the luxury car market to BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Infinity, etc. I think the essential problem for G.M. is that the difference between a BMW 3 series and a BMW 7 series is the engine size and the extra gizmos and gadgets in the 7 or 8 series. The difference between Cadillac and Chevy is the badge and the price. Why would anyone want the Cadillac XLR when they could have a Vette Zo6 or Zr1 for the same money? Let's see I can spend $100k and get a 440 hp Cadillac or get a 500-650 hp Vette, or spend $50k and get the 430hp Vette.

The XLR was released before the C6 hit the market; if you carefully inspect the engineering and design of it, you'd see the focus is on grand touring and comfort. The logic of power for money being everything is heavily flawed. Using that logic would dictate that a $32,000 Ford Mustang GT is a superior product to a $45,000 BMW 335i. The Cadillac logic dismissing the brand as nothing more than upscale Chevrolets is equally flawed.
