Report: Next Mercedes-Benz SLK to Come with Diesel Option

A source within Mercedes-Benz has confirmed rumors that the next SLK roadster—due to debut in the spring of 2010—will offer an optional diesel engine. The redesigned SLK will likely sport the newest of Mercedes’ diesel offerings, a 2.2-liter twin-turbo four that produces 204 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The BlueEfficiency diesel mill is capable of attaining 54.3 miles per gallon when used in the C250 CDI.

The source maintains that the diesel engine is “perfect” for the new SLK, providing enough power to make the car involving, while being economical enough with fuel to raise a few eyebrows in today’s marketplace.

We’re salivating at the proposed combination of a car we love, with an engine we admire, though there’s not a great chance that this one will be coming state-side.

54.3 mpg? Is that UK or US figures? Also, need more hp. At least 250.

It's sad that we'll probably never see it stateside...conflict of interest for American oil companies with their hands inside the governments pockets. Wonder when it'll get bad enough that they'll have to let the diesels come...hm.

Once again. There's no government or oil conspiracy. Americans simply don't buy them hence they are not sold here in any great numbers. Also, our EMISSIONS requirements are extremely strict and only recently did automakers have the tech to make deisels meet emissions standards in the US and CA in particular (at the expensive of fuel economy)

If you want more diesels in the US, get yourself, your friends and family to buy them and pass the word (without biased, BS, rhetoric). Do you own a diesel or are currently in the market for a diesel?
