Roush and Superformance Offer the Special Edition MKIII-R Cobra
Two companies: Superformance, the maker of replica Shelby Cobras, Daytonas, Ford GT40 kit cars, and Roush Performance Engines, a division of Roush famous for creating performance crate 'street engines,' both have recently teamed up to release the Roush/Superformance Special Edition MKIII-R.
Though this special edition was first intended only as a one-off showroom vehicle, high interest after its debut at the 2007 SEMA show in Las Vegas has pushed it into production. Currently the Special Edition is offered as an upgrade package, separate from the standard Superformance MKIII roadster.
What separates it from the regular? Roush embroidered leather seats, unique gauges, and a billet short-throw shifter for one. It'll also come with Roush embroidered floor mats, dual gauge pod, and a serialized plaque.
Under the hood, lucky buyers can choose from a variety of Roush motors, including the 427 IR V-8 that is dyno tested at 576 horsepower and comes with a 2-year/24,000 mile warranty. A Tremec 5-speed transmission transfers the power to the 18 inch American Racing pin drive wheels, while the independent suspension helps keep everything on the ground.
All in all, the Special Edition will give the seeker just a bit more exclusivity in a Shelby MKIII replica. And come on, with a beautiful classic endowed with a massively powerful engine—how can one go wrong? Judging by the pictures, it's certainly impossible.

The Question:
What happens when you take the most sought after 1965 licensed reproduction Cobra replica and shoehorn in an engine built by a company that has more Ford wins than any other manufacture?
The Answer:
You get the Roush/Superformance Special Edition MKIII-R!
The Project:
The Roush/Superformance Special Edition MKIII-R was built specifically to tour the country and represent the bread and butter of what Roush Performance Engines and Superformance LLC have to offer. The plan was to build a one off display vehicle, but the project’s high interest quickly changed everyone’s mind and suddenly the car was slated for production. The Special Edition car was introduced to the public at the 2007 SEMA show in Las Vegas Nevada. The MKIII-R showed the public what it has always wanted to see - two industry leaders working together to produce the best of both worlds, a stunning double diamond with the roar of a lion under the hood. A car that is truly pleasing to all of your senses!
Now Available for Purchase:
The Roush components will be available as an upgrade package that will be sold separately from the standard Superformance MKIII roadster. The interior features a set of Roush embroidered leather seats, unique gauges, billet short-throw shifter, Roush embroidered floor mats, dual gauge pod, and a serialized plaque. Customers can choose from a variety of Roush crate motors including the 427 IR V8 that is dyno tested at 576 horsepower and comes with a 2-year/24,000 mile warranty.

The Journey:
Hillbank Motor Corp collected all the pieces of this performance puzzle and began to align the stars for this new venture. Once the pieces were all collected, Hillbank called on Exotic Automotive Restorations to masterfully assemble the dream car!
The MKIII-R started its journey in South Africa, where it was built completely minus the engine and transmission by Hi Tech Automotive RSA and shipped Hillbank Motor Corp. After 5 weeks on the water it arrived at Hillbank and was quickly sent over to Exotic where it began the transformation process.
The Exotic crew first removed all of the chrome factory trim pieces including the windshield, hood and trunk latches, headlight rings, quick jacks, all the way down to the Tonneau cover rivets and roll bar and sent them out to be coated in a black chrome finish. With the help of the sponsors (Roush, GTP, Wilwood Engineering, Tremec, American Racing, Sube Sport, Michelin USA, and Snake Power Performance) this vehicle was well on its way to its new transformation!

What are "pin drive wheels"?
I've Googled and Wikipedia'd it, but it just seems to be Cobra-specific. Haven't run into anything that actually defines it.

As a former Superformance owner, I can tell you what pin drives are. Real knock-off mag wheels have holes machined in the back face which fit over five pins in the drive hubs. The knock-off spinner takes the place of the lug nuts to hold the wheel on. The power goes through the pins.
My question:
What if you like this car, but think Jack Roush is a mega-jerk and you don't want his name plastered all over it?

I'm with JR - Wonder if one might be had for, say, ten grand less, as the 'Roush Logo Delete' model? Could be a real sleeper . . .

If you don't want the Roush logo plastered all over the car, you can save a bundle by buying the standard Superformance Cobra kit (or any of a dozen other Cobra kits from a dozen other manufacturers) and building your own, or buying a turn key replica from any of those same manufacturers. Frankly putting 576 horsepower in a car that weighs a little bit more than 1/2 of what a Vette weighs seems kind of scary for me. I'm sure the car's capabilities are way beyond my capabilities as a driver. They mentioned on the Barrat-Jackson auction show on Speed that the Super Snake that was sold at Scottsdale this year was one of two original Super nakes built. The other was built for comedian Bill Cosby. Bill had the car for about 6 months and it scared him so bad he sold it. The guy that bought it was killed in it when it went off a cliff on California Highway 1 between San Simeon and Big Sur. If I had 576 hp in a 1750 lb car, I would probably die in it as well.
