Schumacher Crashes Ferrari on 'Ring--With His Son?

Retired Formula One champion and racing legend Michael Schumacher just can’t seem to slow down. The Ferrari-master was spotted last Tuesday circling the Nordschliefe circuit at Germany's Nürburgring in a Ferrari 430 Scuderia with his young son, Mick, in the passenger seat. Later during that same session, the partially damp track was closed after the same Ferrari--a model Schumi himself helped develop--was involved in a wreck.

There are conflicting reports as to whether the car was a prototype or a production Scuderia test car. Judging by these new on-the-scene photographs from our friends at CarPix, early reports that the Ferrari was a write-off appear to be incorrect, even though German newspaper Bild reports that the car went off at more than 250 kilometers-per-hour (155 miles-per-hour).

It is unclear if his son Mick—a new kart driver himself—was in the car when the accident took place, but Schumacher’s spokeswoman Sabine Kemp has apparently gone on record acknowledging the shunt. Worryingly, our man in the trees' photographs clearly show the F1 champ and his son driving on the circuit without helmets, though it isn’t clear at what speed...

Good to see him out there pushing it and finding the limits still. Was he setting a lap time for the Scud at the 'ring, or just out there personally? I thought Ferrari doesn't do this type of testing / timing.

It is OK not to wear a helmet at the Ring. The rules don't say you need to, and the car has modern safety equipment. Sure, a helmet may reduce the chance of fatality in a severe impact by 10-15%, but I don't think Schumacher would wreck so severely to need to worry about this.

Really this isn't a very bad accident. It looks like he just lost the tail of the car near some Armco. I have been there a few times and there isn't much run off there (it's not the Nurburgring F1 circuit afterall).

Also, winding road, wtf is this new site? Go back to windingroad.com.

I think it's stupid to bring a kid into a racing venue without proper protection, even if you're a world class driver who isn't likely to crash hard. That's just daring Fate to eff you up.

Doesn't matter if you're.... well, Michael Schumacher..... Hot-lapping that car near its limits requires safety gear, and if his kid was in the car with him without gear- dang, dude- be a Dad, set an example.....

Looks like he was going under 50 mph when he wrecked. He was probably just doing a brodie in the grass and lost control:) I was going under 40 in the rain in my 914 on the freeway and lost it into the center divide(I had rust dammage in the rear end that I didn't know about)......Looks about the same amount of dammage to me.
