Spied: Mercedes-Benz SLK Prototype

Our spy photographer caught the Mercedes-Benz SLK prototype testing at the Nürburgring, where the engine apparently caught fire on the first lap. Exciting stuff.

Also exciting is that this, the third generation of the SLK, may get a diesel engine in the lineup. It should be on the market in 2012, and our spy photographer promises more revealing photos between now and then.

Click through the gallery above to see the SLK at the ‘Ring (complete with guys with swirly heads checking out the damage under the hood), or scroll down for the photographer’s own words.

The third generation Mercedes SLK has been spotted again.
And this time they are testing at the ring, at least that was what Mercedes had in mind. But a smaller engine fire on the first lap changed all those plans for today. Let’s see if they manage to get it out tomorrow or later this week. We still have some photos taken on its way to the track and outside the garage where the driver and mechanicals look at the damage.
We can expect a new range of engines and this time we will probably find a diesel engine under the hood for the first time in the SLK history.
Because the new SLK will first hit the showrooms in 2012, we will have plenty of chances to update you with more photos with less and less camouflage as the development will continue.
