Spy Shot: Look Ma, No Tailpipe – All-Electric Mini Spied!
Engineers at BMW are busy cooking up an all-electric version of the effervescent Mini, a car that should help the automaker off-set its less conscientious offerings from the likes of the M motorsports division and Rolls-Royce. Such an EV will come in handy when trying make the grade for upcoming European Union CO2 standards, as well as regulations coming on the books for California in 2012.
The electric Mini may look very similar (re: almost exactly the same) as the current cars, but can be fairly easily distinguished by two things; the slightly misleading “HYBRID” sticker on the side, and the total absence of offal-spewing tailpipes.

BMW and Mini are working on a full electric version of the Mini to help them lower the total CO2 emissions for the brand. With not so CO2 friendly brands as Rolls Royce and the M models in the portfolio all help is needed to fulfill the new EU standards as well as the new Californian regulations for manufacturers to offer zero emission vehicles by 2012.
Clear giveaway is the exhaust pipe, or should we say the lack of the exhaust pipe. And of course the Hybrid sticker, even if this is no hybrid but a full electric car.

Wimpy? My MCS [MINI Cooper S] (known to Bimmerphiles as "R53") dynos 200hp at the wheels with very little modification (I've spent more on Graphics and Audiophile upgrades than performance). On a track day my car weighs in at a whopping 3020 lbs with me and a full tank of gas. My power to weight ratio, coupled with the superior 'Go Kart' handling, means I tend to leave all comers eating dust. Even those Mustangs, Corvettes and Chargers. They try to pull ahead, then we come to the first curve and... "Hey, where'd they go??? Wow, they are waaayyyyy back there".
Plus those that understand the fun-damental "MINI"mal view of the Brand see that this is a good, overall expansion of the brand (bring out an SAV, counter with an Electric).
As a MINIac, I see the body of the MINI One (the base model everywhere but NA) mated up with the rear bumper/valance of the Cooper S/JCW lines, although I'm sure the final product will have something much more in line with the One, Se7en, Cooper and Clubman models than the Cooper S and JCW lines. As a production car, it will come in under the current price tag for electric conversion (I think the cheapest is around $50k, plus base price of car), and probably run between the convertible and JCW models as far as price. With the 'rest of the world' able to feast on a MINI ranging from around $12k to $45k, going from 96hp all the way up to 209hp, and getting between 30mpg (for the new "gas guzzling" 'Moke/Crossman/Colorado/Traveller' SAV Concept models) up to 80mpg (for the Cooper D) and including 'Gas, what's that?' for the new (I'll coin it here) Cooper E, I think MINI stands a chance to maintain their winning lineup for years to come. Let's face it, they've kept expanding and making a profit while other Brands are closing plants. To quote db from White Roof Radio, "MINI sales up 15% for the month of August... and a collective 'Duh' is heard throughout the land."

I think the funniest part is when you say that your whimpy mini can beat a corvette. see, not every one who drives a sports car in a daily cruise is racing. What happened then is probably you were racing yourself.

In his defense, he was talking about track driving where you have people that can make Michael Schumacher look like a newb mixed with people that are..umm...newbs. It's quite possible to have a "lesser" car beat a "greater" car with an inexperienced driver behind the wheel of the greater car. And depending on how technical the track is, big hp doesn't always win. And grip is grip, whether from a FWD Mini or a RWD Vette ZR1. If you have equal drivers and grip, both cars will take a corner at the same speed. The big difference is in corner entry and exit. Who can get on the power sooner, brake later, and maintain the advantage. I've seen a 125whp Honda Civic (it was a featherweight with full cage, suspension, basically a race car) with an absolutely awesome driver waste cars with double and triple the power cause they didn't have enough power or grip to make up for the advantage that the Civic driver had gained in the corners.
Now if you have decent experience, a decently setup car AND more power then no 125whp Civic can hang no matter who is driving. Otherwise, track driving can be a humbling experience.
