Spy Shot: New BMW Z4 Spied, Nearly Naked
Caught lightly camouflaged and in a very near production state of development, the red roadster seen here is the very latest version of BMW’s new Z4.
The new car is sporting a retractable hard top, not exactly high on the list of wants for most open top purists, but probably a necessity at this point with such technology becoming more and more common in the market.
Other changes to the popular convertible appear to be much more evolutionary than revolutionary but there are still some significant differences that can be easily seen. The central rear brake light has been moved inboard from the lip of the trunk lid to near the rear windscreen, and the shoulder line of the Z4 has been smoothed out considerably. It also appears as if the diagonal character line just in front of the door on the current car has been deleted – though the placement of the cammo masks this area fairly well – a move that would be in line with BMW’s recent moves to unclutter the styling of its vehicles.
Have a look at the new Z4 in our gallery above or scroll down below to read the shooter’s own words.
Today we snapped a prototype with the last stage of camouflage on the upcoming Z4. And thank you BMW, for making it a red one. We were tired to see all those black and black-white psycho cammoed one, so it was nice to see another color.
There is still some camouflage on the details like front and rear lights, but overall we can now make us a good picture of how the new Z4 will look like.

Much less ugly that the current model! Might be able to consider buying a BMW again.

the current model is not ugly. It is just underpowered (not the M) and heavy. I hope the new model returns to the light weight formula. Do I see a retractable hard top over there? or is it just a tape. Coz if it is not a retractable hard top, it is surely a removable one. I personally prefer a removable hard top for a convertable. Looking forward to know more about it.
Blue Z4
You're right on the mark, Mo, the old Z4 is definitely underpowered... about 100hp. The si model should have been 300+ horsepower and the M should have shot you to the moon. I love mine, but it just doesn't compare to its high-end competitors in terms of paper specs. I prefer the "flame surfacing" Bangle-style on the sides and I'm not sure why there's a contingent out there so against it. There's no car like it in the broad market. It gives definition and shape to the car. Unless you prefer the boring wooden shoe look like on the s2000, audi tt, miata, 350z look. Can't wait to see the final product on the next gen z4.
2008 3.0si
Agreed, my Z4 is a neat car, but I certainly think it needs more power. Mostly because my E36 328is is faster than it! Hopefully the next Z4 is more of a performance car with the TT 3.0L!

I have to completely disagree with DM, I think it's one of the best looking, reasonably priced sedans I've seen in an while

Underpowered? Heavy?
I've had my 2003 3.0 for a bit under 6 years and those aren't words I'd use to describe it. The Z4 was faster than a base Boxster but slower than the S and weighed around 2998 lbs vs. the Boxster's 2911. I personally like the looks of the Z better, although the Porche is easily the winner in the handling department thanks to the awful electric steering in my bimmer.
It's pretty easy to see in the pictures released so far that the new Z will have a retractable hardtop, so it certainly won't be lighter. Of course it should also have that twin-turbo 3.0 engine of the 335i to compensate, so it should be fun. IMO it's getting away from what a BMW roadster SHOULD be, but oh well.
Might just have to pounce on an '08 M model to keep me happy for the next few years :)

I disagree with the above comments. Anders Warming's design has really matured over time. The character and shoulder lines are still modern and distinctive as what you see throughout Europe re: design. The deletion of the "Z" character line that carries from the A pillar is a mistake as this was a pure design element. I had an M coupe (a near perfect car), but found the 3.0si to be the better model for day to day driving. The N52 with it's 3stage intake is extremely quick (i couldn't feel a difference from my M) The exhaust note was better. The only thing i preferred on my M was the Mdiff and the rack and pinion hydraulic over the boosted power steering unit. The most important feature in my car is my car's fuel econ returning 32mpg on a recent trip. Lastly, i miss driving in europe where my 330ci bmw coupe regularly saw 200-250kph on average. It's sad that all these stoplight drag race wannabees will never know that the real pleasure is to the right of the speed/tach.

This one doesn't look like a WW2 fighter plane in these photos. Such a shame. The current Z4 is so much better for it. It looks more agressive, as it should.

I like the new look so far. It looks wider and shorter, less like Converse "Chuck Taylor".
Ducati Minor
Needs more nudity.
z4emmmm
maybe it's the camo and the fact that it's a base model and not the M I'm familiar with, but this car looks far less muscled. more like an older jag xk. smooth. soft. not bad, but not great. keeping my hopes up for a more ballsy M (V-8 anyone?)
Test King
I like the car so far looks not less not bad but need some more change to attract consumer but over all is graceful i must try this one just after my 350-001 exams for Routing and Switching system, and more focusing on my other exam of 640-802 for Cisco Certified Network Associate certification. After this i will be able to drive this splendid car i must say I'm gonna love it as its appearing in Picture.
