Spy Shot: Next Generation 6-Series Nabbed!

Our spy photographers have just tipped in with a new set of images depicting the next generation of the BMW 6-Series out in the wide world. It’s the convertible version of the 6 seen testing here, and though the pictures show a conventional canvas-topped car, our reports indicate that the final car will actually use a folding hardtop for cover. Tricky, tricky BMW.

The new car will be longer and wider than the outgoing model, with those additions to the dimensions helping to make more room for front and rear passengers. The added exterior size is hidden somewhat by having the wheels pushed out further to the corners—front and rear.

Engines are expected to be both lighter and more fuel efficient that in the current car, and BMW’s new eight-speed automatic transmission should also be in play. Find the shooter's own words below.

Today we managed to get the first spy shots of the upcoming BMW 6 series, and it looks like the convertible version is out testing first. But don’t get fooled by the canvas top, this looks like a folding hardtop convertible to us.

The cars overall length will be a little longer to make more room inside, especially in the back seat, but the overhang in both front and rear will be shorter. Together with the better looking boot lid, the lines of this new 6 series look much more in harmony.

Just like the current 6 series this is more of a GT then a sports car, and therefore you will find plenty of new luxury gizmos here. The current engines will probably get some lighter modifications to make them more fuel efficient and we guess there will be both a new eight-speed automatic transmission and a dual-clutch transmission to choose from.
