Spy Shots: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible

Our spy photographers have gotten a first look at the latest Mercedes-Benz convertible, a car that is likely to be known as the E-Class convertible rather than a CLK convertible.

Longer and roomier than the current CLK droptop, this E-Class will share engine choices with the rest of the range, meaning everything from four-cylinder diesels to stonking AMG-tuned V-8s. The new car will be big enough to offer four real-people sized seats, with the front chairs said to have been redesigned to offer more leg room to rear passengers. With the newly named E-Class coupe expected to be entering the market in May of next year, it’s a good bet that the convertible variant will appear some bit later in 2009.

Times are changing, even at Mercedes. With the old CLK convertible being a soft top, the new one will not just change into a folding hardtop but also change its name.

Let us introduce the Mercedes E-class convertible.

Growing about 10 cm in length compared to the old CLK, this new convertible (and upcoming coupe) will be based on the new E-class platform. That also means that the engine options will be the same as we will find on the E-class sedan. Expect all between economical four cylinder diesels up to powerful V8 petrol machines from AMG.

The fact that the new convertible will be longer, and that the front seats will have a new shape on the rear side,  will make the backseat passengers have more room for their legs. This will be a true four seat convertible.

With the E-class coupe out on the market in May 2009, we can expect the convertible version hit the showrooms after the car show in Frankfurt, meaning late 2009.

so is that it for the clk?
does that mean there will be no more clk? I hope there would be or else...

I do believe that the CLK name will be retired, and will be be replaced by the E class coupe.
