Spy Shots: 2011 Suzuki Swift

Suzuki made a big splash with the debut of its all-new Kizashi mid-size sedan last week, but the automaker is far from finished with its North American offerings.

Witness the new Suzuki Swift, still hidden from prying eyes, but with a completed nose poking through for us to ponder.  Suzuki maintains that the diminutive seen here Swift will be headed to the U.S. sometime next year, and may just challenge Mini for the cutest ride on the block when it arrives.

Diesel and Hybrid versions of the car are likely to be on offer in Europe during the car’s life cycle, and we’d guess that U.S. customers might very well have the option to buy the pocket-rocket Swift Sport. The standard car will be a front-driver, though there some credence to the rumor that an all-wheel drive version may be in the works, too. All-wheel capability would certainly fit with Suzuki’s go-anywhere image.

Suzuki is working on the next generation Swift, and today we can show you the most revealing photos of it. Earlier photos showed the fully clad, but this time we got the Swift with the nose clear. And with the new mid-size sedan Kizashi officially revealed now, we can see that the Swift will have lines from that new family face.

There will be a range of both petrol and diesel engines, and it’s likely that a hybrid version will follow. The Swift Sport will be the top of the line model, and hopefully it will have the same amount of Fun-factor as the current version. Front-wheel drive will be standard, but there are some rumors that they might be an all-wheel-drive version available.

And what’s more important for the US market is that Suzuki has announced that they will bring back the Swift to the US in 2010. Gene Brown, marketing director of American Suzuki Motor Corp said “The Swift is known as a pocket rocket internationally, and that is the type of product we want here.

About bloody time this thing arrived.  I think it's 4 years too late considering the standard that the Honda Fit set.  Hopefully it has ~120hp and a deep overdrive gear.  I'd love it if it were considered the "budget Fit", with few comprimises on space and accessibility, but 90% of the Fit's handling, steering, and brakes.  I hope their advertising crew just keeps throwing JWRC winner all over the screen.

Oh the things I would've done if I were in charge of product development in the US for Suzuki...  At least they're following through with the Kizashi and Swift Sport.

I am a retiree and we (retirees) now represent a large market segment with money on hand. Most of us are at an age where we have learned how to invest wisely. A $40,000 plus piece of tin that depreciates at 30 % annually while sitting in our driveway is by no means very smart to us. Our money is better deployed in a home addition with a sauna, games room and a big screen TV or a time share in Florida or Costa Rica or perhaps regular vacation packages each winter when our bodies need this comfort during our waning years. A car to us needs only to be basic,  reliable and cost sensitive (read: cheap to run/upkeep) in our list of priorities. With gas soon to reach $6 per gallon on top of all of this, it only further enhances this mindset.

A four cylinder four door diesel hatchback would be ideal for us here in North America. Diesel today is vastly improved, has little engine electronics, runs 30% further on fuel, and requires way less in tune ups (read: no plugs, mufflers, computer packs, etc). Yes VW has small diesels but they are overpriced, overloaded with faulty electronics and begging for sane competiion. This Suzuki Swift shown here is not that car unfortunately but it is a 4 cyl. (again) in an already becoming small, overcrowded "gas" engine market (read: no imagination). I will continue to wait until someone gets it right (diesel). Hybrids are not the answer at this point either due to uncertain, expensive battery technology that presents a big step back when time comes to recycle. Just plain diesel is a nice interim propellant until our hybrid battery technology is replaced by something better; perhaps super capacitors but that time is not here yet.

No offense, but if I were retired, I wouldn't buy ANY car let alone a new one. You should've already bought the car you need to get the job done while you were working AND have paid that car off before you retired. If you are a car nut and that's what you're doing while retired and have planned for that accordingly, I could understand, but if you just need transportation, that should've already been done.

You don't sound like you are planning too well for your own retirement! Some people have a retirement that lasts longer than the "lifespan" of a typical car. Yes, theoretically a given car can last longer than a human could ever live. However, by lifespan, I mean that at some point the given cars operational cost becomes so much more than the value of a new(er) replacement. Anyhow, as a retireee, who would want be stuck with the same car to the bitter end? If that were the case for me, you might as well just send me before the Death Panel right now.

In that kind of price range, diesels don't tend to make sense for a vehicle that is trying to convey sporting characteristics.  Diesels work well on 4 door commuter cars, more Point A to B in comfort, not Point A to B through curvy, twisty, Route C.

What makes more sense than diesel?  Reduce weight.  Better handling.  Better acceleration.  Better braking.  Better fuel economy.

All the hatch needs is a 1.8L with a short throw 6speed, steep overdrive.  Anything over 30mpg would be great, and considerably better than the Tc, Xb, Xa, Kia Forte, Kia Soul, etc.
