Spy Shots: New Jaguar XJ Prototype Spied

We’ve already seen tons Jaguar XJ images so far, in various stages of completion and camouflage, but none quite so revealing as this latest set.

The Jag engineers have gotten a pretty crafty with their cladding of this XJ prototype, using the same sort of swirling body cover that’s favored by BMW, as well as creating a fake “double kidney” grille for the car. Our spy shooter isn’t biting though, and it’s fairly easy to see the Jaguar cues lurking below the surface. The British automaker is moving away from the shape of the current XJ, which has been largely unchanged for decades, in favor of adopting many styling cues and shapes from the lovely XF.

Have a better look at the car in our gallery above, or scroll down to read the shooter’s report.

Jaguar's managing director Mike O'Driscoll told us three weeks ago that everyone that is waiting for the new generation Jaguar XJ does not have to wait very long. In London, 9th of July, the new flagship of Jaguar will be presented, a car that is said to take a big step from the present structure and shape, which largely have remained unchanged since the model was introduced 41 years ago.

The shape is softer and sportier than before, which we see clearly on these new pictures. But don't be fooled by Jaguar's masking trick - this is not a BMW despite the kidneys in the front and that the Brits use a similar psychedelic masquerading as the car manufacturer from Munich. That this is new XJ is clearly visible if you look at what lies behind the black and white stripes. Take a look at the front - the lights breathe clearly Jaguar with forms similar to those sitting on the XF. Take a look at the rearview mirrors and you will see that they also follow the same template as on XF. Rear lights also look to appear like at the picture that Jaguar sent out in April. The end pipes are Jaguar-typical, taken directly from the XF.

Jaguar said in an earlier press release that the new XJ is built entirely of aluminum, by the same principles as in aircraft construction. Together with the suspension of aluminum Jaguar says that XJ will be lighter than any other competitor. The body, which will be available in a long and a short version, is put together by rivets and glue for superior strength. Another innovation for the XJ is that you can choose a panoramic glass roof.

Under the hood you will find the big V8 from XFR: a 5.0 litre engine that provides 510 horsepower, and the new 3.0 litre diesel that provides 275 hp and 600 Nm.
