Spy Shots: Next Generation Ford Focus Mules Spied!
Ford has started to run some test mules for its next generation Focus, spotted this first time around in both sedan and wagon variants. While we are certainly excited to see a load-lugging Focus being tested out, we’re not going to hold our breath that Ford has plans to bring the wagon version to North America for the first time since the first-generation car.
The Euro-bodied Focus mule also happen to be running much higher off of their wheels than normal. These mules have got ground clearance that a Jeep could respect, though we’re not particularly sure why.
New Focus will likely look something like the crisp Iosis Max Concept that we were shown at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and we’d be happy to see those new style Ford wheels (as seen on the new Fusion) make the options list as well. Click through the gallery above to have a closer look.
Ford is out and testing with the new Focus, too bad it’s just with the mules. But at least that’s a good sign at a financial crisis like this. We are all eager to see what Ford will do against the new Astra, yet to come in September, and the Golf from Volkswagen. This is the first time that we see the Focus mules, and we spotted both a sedan and a wagon mule.
If you look close to the photos of the sedan, you will notice that it’s running very high. Looks strange to us, but it could have something to do with their testing program.
We guess the real car will have some of the design directions that we just saw on the Iosis Max Concept, even if the Max Concept was more of a smaller MPV, targeted against Opel Meriva and Co.

I love my '03 hatchback Focus with the 2.3 engine and 5-speed. I love the way it steers and handles and accelerates.
Now why in the world did Ford discontinue A) the 2.3 in the hatchback?, and B) why did they take away the hatchback altogether?
I would love to see the proposed smaller version, but with the same engine. It would be lighter and faster.

Why is it so jacked up in the air? All it is BTW is todays focus with a new front end. Its actually a let down. All in all its a cheap update that should net ford some profit. All in all they are playing it safe.

Of course it looks like the current car ... it's just a test mule, not the next version of the Focus. We won't know how that new car would actually look like yet ... short of knowing that it will resemble the Iosis Max Concept.

Exactly. A test mule is generally a bastardization of two generations of a car model. The fact that these LOOK like the current Euro Mk2 Focus lineup most likely belays the fact that they have Mk3 Focus internals and drivetrain parts. Its all just for testing. And I'd ignore the fact that they are on stilts for whatever reason. Alot of mules look like that. Be assured though that they won't start looking like the Mk3 Focus until much closer to the reveal/ launch date.
I'll wait for rumors of specs and real concept photos before getting my hopes up. I'd rather have more Euro styling on the new Focus than the 'Contour Jr.' that the US has now. Oh, and I want my hatchback model again please :P

The Focus mule is raised up most likely because the Focus platform is the basis for the Ford Kuga small SUV in Europe. The Kuga is suppossed come to the states as the new Ford Escape soon after the Focus starts selling. So they are killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

The car is probably raised because of Focus-based European-only models that have higher ride heights or higher centers of gravity... cars that I wish we had.
As for the design, it looks clean and functional, and bravo for copying some of the better details from the new Fusion.
...Now if only they'll bring the RS over...
