With electric cars, after price, the most important statistic is range. The cost to charge the batteries is minimal compared to gasoline. If you're looking for an electric vehicle, make sure the range is about double your longest expected trip. The rechargeable batteries degrade with use (just like notebook computers), and the batteries will need to be replaced when they can no longer hold 50% of the original charge. You need to be able to drive that longest expected trip on 50% of a new battery's charge, as they near the end of their useful life.

If the range is sufficient, then what's the cost to replace the batteries? How often? If you pay $6,000 every 50,000 miles for new batteries, that's comparable to 21mpg (at $2.50/gallon). If it's only $4,000, and they last 80,000 miles, that's comparable to 50mpg (@$2.50/gal).

As you can see from those two examples, those two statistics (cost and frequency of battery replacement) are critical to operating cost. Relatively small changes in those numbers can have big effects on operating costs.

The cost of gasoline has a big effect in that calculation, as well, but the car has nothing to do with that. Expensive gas makes electric cars more attractive economically.
