We would imagine that by now, to tell our readers that the staff of Winding Road are huge fans of the Gran Turismo series of driving simulators would be roughly akin to telling them that water is wet—pretty obvious. That doesn’t make us at all unique, as millions of gamers with a jones for fast metal have known since the initial GT launched on the PlayStation One back in 1997. The Real Driving Simulator hit a resonant chord in that first year, and has continued to set the bar very high in each of its subsequent instantiations.

With that as our backdrop, you can imagine our excitement at being among the members of the media approved by Sony to take the latest version of the GT franchise, Gran Turismo for PSP, for a full test drive. GT PSP is the first ever version of the game to be made available for Sony’s PlayStation Portable, and like every other GT game, has traveled a long (some might say torturous) path from inception to public offering. The take-along version of GT was actually intended to be one of the early flagship games for the PSP—originally announced at the E3 conference all the way back in 2004. Creators Polyphony Digital are well known for stringing along GT fans with a heartbreaking announcement/delay/announcement/delay production cadence, but after five years of waiting GT PSP will be offered for sale on October 1st of this year. Having now played the full version of the game for a few days we feel that release date to be firm, but the question remains, is the final product worth the long wait?

We've been swooning over the new Lotus Evora for the past few months, and the first round of customers are just starting to take delivery of their cars. And while Lotus' road cars are nothing short of superb, we've seen them crank out some pretty delicious race-ready versions of their products over the years. The Evora follows suit, and we now have a whole set of images and specs about the new Type 124 Evora racer which is built to FIA GT specifications and will make its official debut at next year's 24 Hours of Nürburgring race.

Obviously, the key modifications to make a car track ready are to remove weight and add power. The Type 124 is about 440 pounds lighter than the standard Evora, bringing the car's curb weight to around 2600 pounds. Lotus achieved this by replacing most of the bodywork with carbon composite panels. As for power, the mid-mounted V-6 has been boosted to produce over 400 horsepower and comes with an all-new six-speed sequential gearbox.

This September, SCCA enthusiasts will enjoy a whole heap of championship action.

This weekend, September 5-6, the TireRack SCCA ProSolo Season Finale will take place at the Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln Nebraska. Following that, at the same venue, the Solo National Championships will begin on Tuesday, September 8, and culminate on Friday, September 11.

September 22-27, Road America will host the 46th SCCA National Championship Runoffs, which will mark the end of the SCCA Club Racing season. Qualifying will take place one the September 22, 23, and 24, while races will be on the September 25, 26, and 27. Fans can watch on the web, via Speedcast TV.
