Mercedes-Benz is hosting the AMG Driving Academy this fall, in which customers get a chance to drive various AMG vehicles at one of three famous tracks: Laguna Seca Raceway, Palm Beach International Raceway, and Lime Rock Park. AMG offers three stages, in which drivers can practice performance driving techniques with professionals in various AMG vehicles, including the E63, C63, CLK Black Series, SLK55, and SL63.

One particular stage focuses on the upcoming 2011 SLS AMG (pictured in the gallery above), in which participants get track time in the vehicle before its launch.

Programs begin next month, and start at $1895. Go to the AMG Driving Academy website for more information on locations, dates, and registration.

BMW has released a video explaining why they decided to pull out of Formula One racing after the current season. In the video, BMW’s Dr. Klaus Draeger emphasizes that it was not because of BMW Sauber’s poor performance this season, nor was it due to economic difficulties.

Ferrari announced today that they plan to ask Michael Schumacher to replace Felipe Massa for the up-coming Grand Prix races, until Massa is fit to race again.
Schumacher’s spokesperson had earlier stated that if asked Schumacher would be willing to substitute Massa temporarily. In a statement released today, Schumacher said, “I was meeting this afternoon with (Ferrari team principal) Stefano Domenicali and (chairman) Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe”. He went on to say that the reason he has agreed to take Massa’s place is largely due to team loyalty. Schumacher, who retired from Formula 1 racing in 2006 has to undergo a special training program over the next few days to show that he is fit enough to race.

Sir Stirling Moss celebrates his 80th birthday this September and UK based Motor Sport magazi ne’s October issue has been dedicated to the retired racing legend. 

Motor Sport has asked Sir Stirling to be a guest editor for one day to help with its October issue. The issue has been timed with Sir Stirling’s 80th birthday and is going to honor his racing career. The issue will highlight his most memorable moments in racing as well as his life after he retirement, some 50 years ago. Moss is at Motor Sport magazine’s London office today helping its editors think up headlines and reminiscing about his racing days. Consider us jealous.

BMW announced today that, to keep in line with the automaker’s viability plan, it will leave Formula 1 racing after this season. Instead, it will use the funds for technology development and sustainability projects.

BMW Sauber is currently eighth in the Formula 1 standings for the season. In its ten seasons of racing since 1993, the team achieved its first win last year in the Gran Prix du Canada in Montreal.
