With the recent announcement of Bob Lutz’s impending retirement from General Motors as Vice Chairman of Global Product Development, we thought it would be time to take a look at a few of the things for which Maximum Bob will be remembered.

Bob Lutz is a true car guy - and one who doesn't suffer fools gladly.

The news of Lutz's retirement was expected and unwanted. Lutz's charisma and direct talk gave the public a clear understanding of what GM was seeking to accomplish. You either loved him or hated him. Under his vice-chairmanship, GM rolled out its most interesting vehicle lineup in thirty years. Not all of them were commercial wins. The SSR and Holden-based GTO were notorious flops. But they were both entertaining concepts: a factory hot rod and an Aussie muscle car with bargain performance. Lutz also did much to concentrate GM's resources into manufacturing well-built and class-matching passenger cars.
Lutz has already revealed his fear and frustration about GM's future. The long-desired turnaroud has yet to occur and the credit crunch has halted any pickup. Then you have the labor problem. Lutz departs a ship in dreadful waters and with dwindling resources.
I'm concerned for the General and my confidence in its long-term survival is in question. I think it is time for GM to retire or sell GMC, Saturn, and Pontiac. Buick has a couple of good models in the pipeline, but even I have my doubts about it coming back. Saab can't even find a buyer.
These are hard times.

As I have said before, drop the GMC line ONLY if GM has desired that the medium duty and heavy truck markets are something they do not want to compete in any longer.
