If there was one positive factor about 2008's energy crisis, it's that it forced consumers to put more weight on fuel economy when making car-buying decisions. And while we may have moved away from $4-per-gallon gasoline, fuel efficiency still places high on the "must have" list for a lot of new car shoppers. Now that we know how easily these price hikes can happen, it's better to be safe than sorry, right?
We've seen major manufacturers expanding their ranges of hybrid offerings, and for the first time, clean diesels are starting to make their way onto American soil, proving that you don't have to sacrifice performance for the sake of fuel consumption. OMG Smarts are for DUMB ass people. 36 combined? How can you reasonably say that that's the car for you when there are a multitude of cars that get just about the same mileage and have sooooo much more space and drivability? VII, do you know that: Hyundai/KIA, Toyota/Scion, Honda, Nissan/Renault/CitroenPSA, Chevy/Opel, Ford, and the Chinese; sell A-segment city cars overseas in the class of the SMART (DUMB) that get as much as 45-75 MPG, have 10 more horsepower, and are a foot longer?!!!!!!!!!!

Consumer Reports recorded 39 mpg combined. Not amazing, but not bad. The $14,000 price tag ain't cheap, but I'm fine with people buying small sippers. Sorry, but they're a sh*tload more preferable than Explorers, Tahoes, Rams, and F-150s
The Smart could be a fad, but it seems the large pickup/SUV has become a certain one.

Youre right Ducatti, however come on man. You know damm well the smart will not be the solution to the problem. The solution should be, for the Foreign and Domestic automakers to bring their Euro and Asian cars over. I have a feeling in the current climate that will happen. Honda listened with the Fit and Yaris. Ford is listening with the Fiesta. Hyundai will listen by replacing the Accent with the i20. KIA is listening by bringing their Soul over.

The average on fueleconomy.gov from owners is 38.5 mpg. That's out of 38 reports. Sure, some of those are BS but there's a chunk right in the mid to high 30 mpg range.

I wouldnt expect blatant anti Hyundai/KIA racism from Winding road, but wow this is silly. You left out cars from the manufacturer that has the 3rd highest CAFE standard, and supported big SUVs with Hybrid engines instead by irresponsible American Automakers such as FORD.

The Kia Rio is not on the list because it has 30 mpg combined and therefore is not in the Top 10. The Hyundai Accent is not on the list because it has 30 mpg combined and therefore is not in the Top 10. The next cars below the Top 10 (i.e. cars 11, 12 and 13) are the Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac G3. Then comes the Rio and then the Accent. That's not racism, it is data.

whoever said the smart car is dumb was right...
why would i pay for something with basically the same gas mileage as a honda civic but with like... less than half the space? I mean unless i lived in NYC and needed that car for parking reasons... but even then... there are parking garages... I mean come on... Even though it is safe... the weight difference between that and even a honda pilot is ginormous... in a traffic accident the smart would be a hockey puck.
also a car that small and light should be getting much better gas mileage...

yes, with todays crisis it's not so easy to decide who is the best and much more harder to try to predict who will manage to benefit in these conditions... But I do not think that people now think about buying ecoautos, which are considerably more expensive
