Toyota to Show Electric City Car in Detroit

Toyota iQWe already know that Toyota is planning to show its 2010 Prius at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, but the automaker has now hinted that it will be showing an all-electric vehicle at Cobo Hall, as well. In a very short press release, Toyota said that "this display marks the world debut of this concept vehicle," so we're not really sure what to expect.

Naturally, there's been some speculation within the industry, and the folks at the Wall Street Journal seem to think that this new concept is a battery-powered version of Toyota's iQ, the Smart ForTwo rival. We'll be sure to bring you the full details from Toyota's press conference in a couple of weeks.

Looks like an old school Air Jordan.

Looks nice.  The Smart is adorable, but I wouldn't recommend it for buyers just yet.  Reliability studies still have to be offered.  The specs aren't bad per se, but the mileage and price are real issues.  I trust Toyota much more, but I'm not sure if I trust Toyota to release an affordable electric-powered city car at this time.  The one electric that had real potential for explosive popularity was the just-released Mini Cooper E.  Two problems: (1) it's only for lease, and (2) it's an $850 a mo. lease.

Other reports say this EV should go on sale in late 2009, a full year ahead of the Volt.

Mena

The Volt is a hybrid, this car is not. Also, the Volt will fit a family, this car will not. No comparison. Apples to credit cards.

Ducati Minor

Those are some mighty fine apples, Mena.  The Volt is, indeed, a plug-in petrol-electric, but GM marketing and the press have been focusing on making it a next-gen electric.  I hope you're not dismissing the iQ EV.  This could be expensive and unimpressive, but Toyota arguably has the electric powertrain lead in the present market.  The Volt looks to change that, but that and other competitors are still around the block.  Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system is still the standard

Mena

Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system is not a serial hybrid drive system. Not comparable to the Volt's system. About the iQ, I dismiss ANY car that only has a singular purpose. I (We) make decent money and no car of mine will be regulated to just commutes. Talk about a waste of money! People here talk about SUV owners being irresponsible but at least those people USE their vehicles for multiple purposes. IMO, people buying cars for one purpose are just as irresponsible if not more so.

So it's better to buy one full-sized 12 MPG $40,000+ pickup or SUV for 1) occasional towing and 2) mostly everyday family use versus buying something like a $25K Prius for family use and a $10K used truck for less frequent towing/hauling/dump runs? This makes no sense. Plenty of families in the US have at least two or three cars in their driveway, in many cases a smaller, fuel-efficient Japanese sedan or wagon alongside a larger, heavier SUV, van or truck. My retired neighbor across the street lives alone but keeps both a full-sized Chevy pickup and a subcompact Ford wagon in his driveway. The Ford sees a lot more use.

Someday perhaps we'll get the perfect "crossover" vehicle that can do everything, but right now it's all about compromise and improvising. Since the spike this year in gas prices, I'm also seeing a lot of small contractors doing business out of the family minivan lately and leaving the pickup parked at home--or selling it. In fact I just traded in a one-ton Chevy diesel for a Honda Pilot that can tow up to 5000 lbs. Still, it only gets 17-18 mpg average, so for local errands I still borrow my wife's VW Jetta.

The Smart for 2 is for two people. I saw the Toyota IQ in Tokyo last month and it holds four people. The Smart Forfour was made for a while and then dropped due to poor sales.

Mena

Sure enough, the iQ is a four seater. I stand corrected on that. Still not comparable to a mid sized sedan nor comparable to a serial hybrid mid sized sedan. Would anyone here compare a Tahoe to a Corolla?

The rectangle shaped face needs links of londonjewelry that adds width and camouflages the length of the face. A highchoker reduces the length of the face, particularly if the neck is toolong. In addition, a 16¡å or 18¡å necklace that ends in a ¡°U¡±flatters this face. Long hair and narrow links of london is perfect match which can impress others as a fair lady. Fancy clothes coordinating links of london with slight tint could be better.
