Renaissance driver Max Papis inked a deal this week with Geico and
Germain Racing to compete in NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2009 (although the
team will enter him in two races this year). Max is a fan favorite of
those who follow open-wheel and sports car racing in the U.S. and
abroad and we're happy to see him get a ride in Cup. Geico has put its
offbeat promotions and marketing force behind the effort, enlisting the
Cavemen, youngster Lauren Wallace and the Gecko in a series of web video ads.
Adding the debonair Italian to its roster of unique spokespeople seems
just about perfect.

A wonderful example of how car companies promoted their vehicles, this 1960 film from General Motors highlights their Chevrolet Corvair. Note the period-appropriate custom orchestral backing track, something that sounds a lot more Tom & Jerry than what we'd expect in a car advertisement today.
