The Zero is the real deal. I got a tour of the Zero plant and they lovingly hand-assemble the bikes under the watchful eye of their founder (Neil) who designs frames for fun when he's not out crushing Santa Cruz's mountain bike trails. The performance of the bikes fully-charged against your average YZ or KX et al comes down to the aesthetics of motocross itself. Those of us who grew up in the pits at outdoor MX events (and indoor supercross events) will miss the Million-Chainsaw March of the exhaust scream coming from machines that compete with Indy cars in power to weight ratios.
While I am not for Zero or any other bike mfg making noise a must-have (and there are EV's out there using simulated exhaust notes... watch for them), it would be nice to have the option of turning on or off a sweet exhaust sound.
Why? Safety. If you are buzzing through the woods on this thing, do you want to nail some deer, or run into a frigging bear? On the road, do you want to get run over by a soccer mom in her Odyssey when you dart around her and she doesn't hear you and she just happens to change lanes while texting someone? If Zero and Brammo and the other EV companies pushing the edge out there dont "get it" yet -- that the aesthetic of the purists matters just as much as the performance of the machine--they will continue to churn companies up the bell curve until somebody gets it right and installs an iPod driven (downloadable exhaust notes!) exhaust-sound system. Bike is parked? Use it to play music while you are stopped on a high hilltop. May i suggest Led Zeppelin's "California"? Sweet.

Or maybe you could buy a Zero and put a playing card in the spokes to help it make noise like every kid did on THEIR alternative energy vehicles (aka "bicycle") as kids. Hey Zero: "duh".
