Volkswagen Golf VI Makes (Early) Debut

Volkswagen has plans to officially launch its sixth generation Golf on Wednesday, August 8, but a few images of the new car have become available just a bit early.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming amount of visual change between Golfs V and VI, with the new car looking marginally larger in nearly every dimension, and wearing a new face with Scirocco-style head lamps. It’s being reported that the Golf will offer 1.4-, 1.8-, and possibly a 2.0-liter gasoline burning engine, with diesels in 1.9- and 2.0-liters in displacement available as well. Standard manual and automatic transmissions, as well as a DSG, will be offered as well.

VW has made mention of bringing this Golf to U.S. shores, but we’ll more than likely have to wait until the late part of next year for the privilege of purchase.

Unless these are pre-production photos, I'm a little disappointed. I am unimpressed, the interior looks dated. Of all companies, VW should have a nicer interior than this. The outside looks boring to me. I'm sure it drives like a dream and probably is solid as a rock but I need a little more than that!

Am I right?

Looks like a facelift of the present car.  New grille and taillights outside; new door panels and center console inside, the rest appears to have been carried over.  Hopefully the VII will cut some of the bloat, the Golf has grown too large.  Considering that the Giugiaro-designed 1975 Golf weighed 1700 pounds, a 3000+ pound Golf is a bit much.

I agree it's way too heavy but they'll introduce a new model before they'd put the Golf on a diet.

Though I agree the Golf/Rabbit has grown hefty in weight, it is one of the top compacts on my list.  The 4 dr. Rabbit S has, simply, the best equipment for a car in its class for $17,000.  The engine has more power than my favorite small sedan (the Mitsu Lancer GTS 2.4), and the 6 spd. A/T is a step ahead of the sluggish 4 spd. in the Saturn Astra.  The versatility and good rep in reliability also place it in high regard.  The Mk. VI isn't a lot to look at compared to what we have now, but it still looks good in my eyes.
