WiFi on Wheels: Chrysler Unveils the UConnect Web System
If the ability to call anyone in the world, play movies, and listen to music while driving isn't enough, Chrysler brings wireless internet to the automotive industry. The UConnect Web will allow drivers to divert their attention away by checking e-mail, playing games, and downloading music. The system will even upload pictures from an SD card directly to Flickr.
It uses existing WiFi and cellular technology to give users the ability to surf the net through the dashboard, according to Chrysler. Any wireless device and every major gaming system out there will be compatible with UConnect.
Scheduled to be introduced next year, the manufacturer is already ahead of BMW in their race to bring internet access into the car by unveiling the web system Thursday.
"In today's market, Chrysler's mission is to bring innovation to market more quickly," said Frank Klegon, Chrysler's Vice President.
Other nifty gadgets Chrysler hopes to lure customers in include rear-seat swivel screens, blind-spot cameras and a device that senses the "rear cross-path."
In the end, it's still up in the air as to which models will receive the UConnect feature. Even though Chrysler claims it will be competitive with laptop wireless cards and customers won't be tied to long contracts, the price is still unknown.

Oh good something else to distract people from using their car for what it is really intended for. Why not just get a smartphone and you can have web access anywhere? Who needs to do this from their car anyway?

I would add that most of these mobile internet via cell connections are quite pricey. Typically, the subscription cost is big enough that foregoing it would allow you to buy a better car.

Awesome! I've been keenly interested in this new emerging technology since I've first watched it on foxnews channel. I'm seeing a great potential for this technology which can probably drive Chrysler's sales for 2009. Also, I'm predicting this will be the trend and most other car companies will follow suit and would not dare leave themselves behind on this.
I'm carefully watching the developments from here on and I've actually started a blog dedicated to this as well.
